CURRENT OPPORTUNITY

MSc Position — Aquatic Invasive Species and Urban Stormwater Pond Ecology

Start date: Spring 2027    Location: University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada

The Fisheries and Aquatic Conservation Lab is seeking an MSc student interested in freshwater ecology, aquatic invasive species, and urban ecosystem conservation.

The project will investigate the ecological impacts of invasive Prussian Carp (Carassius gibelio) in urban stormwater ponds, with emphasis on aquatic biodiversity, community composition, and ecosystem management.

Research will involve field sampling of invaded and uninvaded stormwater ponds in the Edmonton region, aquatic community surveys, and quantitative ecological analysis. Findings will help improve understanding of aquatic invasive species in urban environments and provide practical recommendations for municipalities managing stormwater infrastructure.

We welcome inquiries from motivated students with backgrounds in ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or related disciplines, especially those interested in field research and quantitative ecology.

Other Ways to Join the Lab

We welcome inquiries from motivated researchers whose interests align with the lab's work. Availability of positions and support varies by project and timing.
